Indoor air quality refers to the environmental condition and chemical composition of the air inside and around residential homes, offices, schools, and commercial buildings, specifically as it relates to the health and comfort of the occupants. It measures the presence and concentration of various airborne pollutants, including fine particulate matter, volatile organic compounds, carbon dioxide, biological allergens like mold and pollen, and relative humidity levels. Maintaining high indoor air quality is vital because modern humans spend the vast majority of their time indoors. Poor indoor air quality can lead to immediate irritations like headaches and eye strain, as well as severe long-term health consequences such as chronic respiratory disease, asthma flare-ups, and cardiovascular complications.
