Morning fog is most commonly and scientifically referred to as radiation fog. It typically develops overnight under clear skies and calm wind conditions when the ground loses heat rapidly through thermal radiation, chilling the moist air directly above it until water vapor condenses. It is also colloquially known as valley fog, ground fog, or a heavy morning mist depending on the terrain.
