In the Icelandic language, beer is called "bjór". Following the historic overturn of the long-standing beer prohibition in 1989, the word became a common fixture in local vocabulary, and March 1st is celebrated annually as Bjórdagurinn (Beer Day) to commemorate the return of legal brewing and consumption across bars and restaurants throughout the country.
