Airless paint is not a special type of paint but rather refers to paint that is applied using an airless paint sprayer, or sometimes confused with airless paint sprayer technology itself. More accurately, airless painting means using an airless sprayer that uses high-pressure pump to atomize paint without compressed air, unlike HVLP spray guns that use air. Airless paint sprayers can spray almost any type of paint including latex, oil-based, primers, stains, lacquers, and enamels, often without thinning, because high pressure forces paint through small tip. So airless paint could mean paint formulated for airless spraying, which is typically thicker and can be sprayed unthinned. Some paints are labeled airless spray ready. In some contexts, airless paint might refer to paint stored in airless containers that prevent air contact to extend shelf life, but this is rare. Generally, when people say airless paint, they mean paint applied with airless sprayer. Airless sprayers provide fast coverage for large areas like walls, ceilings, fences, and decks, with more overspray than HVLP but much faster than rollers. So airless paint is regular paint applied via airless spray method, not a distinct chemical type, though some paints are optimized for airless application with appropriate viscosity.
