A people carrier is a type of vehicle designed to carry many people, commonly known as a minivan, MPV which stands for multi-purpose vehicle, or large family van, popular in Europe for transporting families. A people carrier typically has three rows of seats and can carry 5 to 9 passengers, with sliding rear doors and flexible seating that can be folded to carry cargo as well as people. In the United Kingdom and Europe, the term people carrier is used for vehicles that Americans call minivans, such as the Ford Galaxy, Volkswagen Sharan, Renault Espace, or Citroën C4 Picasso, which are designed for families needing more space than a regular car. In North America, similar vehicles are called minivans like Honda Odyssey, Toyota Sienna, and Chrysler Pacifica. A people carrier is different from an SUV because it is usually more focused on interior space and practicality than off-road ability, with lower ground clearance and better fuel economy. People carriers are popular for large families, airport shuttle services, and group transport because they can carry many people comfortably with luggage. So a people carrier is essentially a large family vehicle designed to carry people rather than goods, similar to a minivan with flexible seating.
