A residential furnace is a central heating appliance used to warm a home during cold weather by generating thermal energy and distributing it throughout the building. Depending on the fuel type—such as natural gas, propane, heating oil, or electricity—the furnace burns fuel or uses electric resistance coils to heat a metal heat exchanger. A powerful blower fan then forces indoor air across the warm exchanger, circulating heated air through a network of metal ductwork and registers into every room to maintain a comfortable indoor climate.
