Wiring a standard thermal-magnetic circuit breaker "backwards" (connecting the power source to the load terminal and the wire load to the breaker lug) generally does not prevent the breaker from tripping during an overcurrent or short-circuit fault, as current flow operates bi-directionally through the internal trip coil. However, doing so violates manufacturer installation guidelines, can complicate maintenance shutoffs, and is strictly prohibited for specific specialized devices like backfed main breakers or GFCI/AFIF breakers.
