If you get into a car crash in New Zealand and you do not have private car insurance, you are personally liable for 100 percent of the repair or replacement costs for any other person's vehicle or property damaged in the collision. While New Zealand's government ACC scheme covers medical treatment and personal injury rehabilitation for all road users regardless of fault, property damage is entirely separate. If you cannot privately settle property repair costs with the other driver, you can face severe legal battles in the Disputes Tribunal or civil courts.
