When the mechanical plunger or electrical contact points inside a residential air conditioning contactor become stuck, welded, or fused in the closed position, it creates a dangerous continuous-run condition. Because the contactor is permanently fused shut, it continues sending uninterrupted 240-volt line power directly to your outdoor compressor and condenser fan motor even when your indoor wall thermostat is satisfied and signals the system to turn off. This means your air conditioner will run continuously twenty-four hours a day without stopping, which can cause indoor coils to freeze into solid blocks of ice, overheat the compressor motor windings, and trip thermal overloads or circuit breakers. To shut the system down immediately, you must pull the outdoor electrical disconnect box handle or trip the main breaker. You can verify the fault when equipment keeps running despite thermostat settings.
