To be a Delta woman most commonly means to be a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, one of the largest and most prestigious historically Black sororities in the United States. Founded on January 13, 1913, at Howard University by 22 collegiate women, Delta Sigma Theta is a member of the National Pan-Hellenic Council, known as the Divine Nine. A Delta woman is known for her commitment to sisterhood, scholarship, service, and social action. The sorority has over 350,000 initiated members worldwide, including many prominent leaders in politics, civil rights, education, and entertainment. Members are often identified by their crimson and cream colors, elephant symbol, and the greeting Oo-oop. Becoming a Delta is a lifetime commitment that involves a membership intake process focused on academic excellence, community service, and character. In a broader Greek life context, a Delta woman could also refer to a member of other sororities with Delta in the name like Delta Gamma, Delta Zeta, or Delta Delta Delta, but in African American culture, Delta almost always refers to Delta Sigma Theta. Outside of sorority life, the phrase has no official meaning and should not be confused with being a woman who is indecisive or changing, which is a misuse of the Greek letter delta that represents change in math.
