In contemporary informal speech or pop culture slang, genki retains much of its traditional root meaning, often used to describe someone who is hyperactive, exceptionally upbeat, cheerful, or full of life. Anime and manga subcultures frequently use the term to describe an archetypal character personality type—known as a genki girl or genki boy—who is exceptionally loud, enthusiastic, athletic, and perpetually optimistic. Additionally, text-based slang or youth interactions might use it loosely to express a state of excitement or high-spirited enthusiasm.
