Cloudy or milky tap water typically indicates one of two distinct conditions. Most frequently, it indicates harmless pressurized air bubbles trapped inside the plumbing system due to high water pressure. Less commonly, persistent cloudiness that settles as fine sediment indicates suspended silt, dirt particles, or chemical particulates originating from municipal main line disturbances, aging galvanized pipes, or failing filtration equipment. Verification: Pour the cloudy water into a glass and let it sit for two minutes; if the cloudiness vanishes from the bottom up, it is simply trapped air.
