In casual slang and everyday language, "brain freeze" describes a temporary, sharp, stabbing headache experienced immediately after consuming very cold food or beverages, such as ice cream or slushies, too quickly. Medically known as a cold-stimulus headache, it occurs when rapid cooling and warming of the palate and blood vessels near the sphenopalatine ganglion cause a sudden dilation and constriction of blood flow. Metaphorically, brain freeze is also used to describe a sudden, temporary moment of mental blankness.
