In trauma psychology and neurobiology, the four F's represent the instinctive survival responses managed by the autonomic nervous system when an individual perceives extreme threat or danger. Originally comprising fight, flight, and freeze, modern psychological frameworks expanded the model to include a fourth response: fawn. These primal reactions dictate how humans instinctively react to stress and trauma, balancing aggression, evasion, immobilization, or appeasement to maximize chances of survival during dangerous or overwhelming circumstances.
