Termites hate several things that disrupt their need for moisture, darkness, and cellulose, with their biggest hates being dry conditions, sunlight and heat, certain natural enemies, and professional termiticides that kill colonies. The thing termites hate most is dryness and lack of moisture, because subterranean termites need high humidity and moisture to survive and build mud tubes to protect themselves from drying out, so fixing leaks, improving drainage, ventilating crawl spaces, and removing wood-to-soil contact makes environments inhospitable and is a key prevention method. They hate sunlight and open air because they are soft-bodied and desiccate quickly, so they avoid light and build covered tunnels. Termites hate natural predators including ants, which raid termite colonies and kill workers, plus nematodes which are microscopic parasitic worms that infect and kill termites from inside, and fungi like Metarhizium that infect colonies. They hate certain materials like pressure-treated wood, cedarwood and redwood which contain natural oils that are somewhat resistant, and they hate barriers like stainless steel mesh and sand barriers that block entry. Most importantly, termites hate professional non-repellent termiticides containing fipronil or imidacloprid, which they cannot detect and carry back to the colony causing death, and bait systems containing growth regulators that prevent molting. While many sources say termites hate smells like vinegar, orange oil, and cloves, these have limited effect on entire colonies and should not replace professional treatment costing $1,000 to $3,000 for liquid barriers.
