Napoleon Bonaparte suffered from several documented health problems throughout his life, and the exact cause of his death remains debated among historians and medical experts. During his life, he suffered from chronic hemorrhoids, which made riding a horse painful, especially during campaigns, and he had recurrent dysuria and urinary problems that may have been related to prostate issues or bladder infections. He also suffered from severe gastritis and stomach ulcers, complaining frequently of epigastric pain, nausea, and vomiting, which were noted by his personal physicians. Some historians have suggested he may have had pituitary disorders or epilepsy, but evidence is weak. He was also said to have had skin problems and chronic leg ulcers. The disease that ultimately killed him on May 5, 1821, on the island of Saint Helena at age 51 was officially recorded by his autopsy physician Francesco Antommarchi as stomach cancer, with a large ulcerated lesion found in his stomach, a condition that also killed his father. For many years, conspiracy theories claimed he was poisoned with arsenic based on high arsenic levels found in his hair, but modern analyses show those arsenic levels were common due to environmental exposure from wallpaper, wine preservation, and medications containing arsenic at the time. Most modern medical reviews of the autopsy report conclude that advanced gastric cancer with bleeding and perforation is the most likely cause of death, possibly exacerbated by peptic ulcer disease and stress.
