Before officially streamlining their athletic branding to the Syracuse Orange, the varsity sports teams representing Syracuse University were historically known for decades as the Orangemen and Orangewomen. Furthermore, during earlier periods of the twentieth century, the athletic department utilized different monikers and traditional symbols, including the Saltine Warrior mascot, before eventually transitioning permanently to the gender-neutral Orange identity and cementing Otto the Orange as the beloved institutional mascot.
