Crayola has discontinued a number of crayon colors over its long history since 1903, often due to changing trends, pigment availability, or to make room for new colors. Some of the most famous discontinued colors include those retired in 1990 when Crayola introduced 16 new colors for its 16-pack expansion. The colors retired in 1990 were maize, lemon yellow, blue gray, raw umber, green blue, orange red, orange yellow, and violet blue. In 2003, Crayola retired four colors as part of a Save the Shade campaign where children voted to save their favorites. The colors retired then were blizzard blue, magic mint, mulberry, and teal blue. In 2017, Crayola retired dandelion, a bright yellow that had been in the lineup since 1990, replacing it with bluetiful, a new blue discovered by Oregon State University. Other older discontinued colors from early 20th century sets include light chrome, dark chrome, and other pigment names that are no longer used. Crayola sometimes brings back retired colors in special limited edition sets like the Retired Colors collection. So the list of discontinued colors is quite long and spans over a century of changes.
