Frequent sump pump cycling (short cycling) is usually caused by a faulty, stuck, or missing check valve allowing discharged water to drain right back into the pit, an undersized sump pit basin holding too little water volume, or groundwater table seepage flowing rapidly through perimeter tiles. When discharged water rushes back into the basin, it immediately triggers the float switch to turn the pump back on, creating an endless, wearing loop that overheats the motor. Verification: Inspect the discharge pipe check valve and observe whether water drains back down into the pit after a pumping cycle.
