What colors your garage door sensors should be depends on brand and model, but for most residential openers including LiftMaster, Chamberlain, and Craftsman, the colors indicate power and alignment status and should be steady when working correctly. Typically, the sending sensor, which is the one with no label or on same side as opener wiring, should show a steady yellow or amber light, indicating it has power and is sending the infrared beam. The receiving sensor, on opposite side, should show a steady green light when it is receiving the beam and is properly aligned. If both show steady, one amber and one green, the sensors are aligned and door should close. If receiving sensor green light is flashing, it indicates misalignment, obstruction, or beam blocked, and door will not close, with opener lights flashing 10 times as error code. If any sensor light is off, it indicates no power, loose wiring, or failed sensor, check outlet and wiring connections at motor unit. Some newer LiftMaster models may have both sensors showing green when aligned, but amber and green is most common. The lights should never be red except on some commercial sensors. Keep sensors 4 to 6 inches above floor, clean lenses, and ensure brackets tight so colors remain steady. If sensors show correct colors but door still reverses, check travel limits and force settings.
