A crank is a mechanical component used to convert circular motion into reciprocating motion, or vice versa. Two very common everyday examples of where a crank is utilized include the traditional manual hand crank found on older automobile windows to roll them up and down, and the hand crank mechanism used on bicycles (the pedal cranks) that transfers the rotational force generated by the rider's legs directly into the chainring to propel the bicycle forward. In both of these instances, the crank mechanism provides mechanical advantage, allowing a person to apply rotational torque smoothly or change the direction and nature of the mechanical force being applied.
