While microplastics contaminate a vast array of global food supplies, health experts and researchers frequently highlight seafood, bottled water, and certain processed or packaged foods as major sources to minimize. Filter-feeding marine life like mussels, oysters, and shrimp often ingest plastic particles present in polluted ocean waters. Studies on commercial bottled water have repeatedly shown high concentrations of microscopic plastic fragments shed from container walls and caps. Furthermore, foods heavily wrapped in single-use plastic packaging or heated in plastic containers can absorb chemical additives and micro-sized polymer debris during storage and preparation.
