Acrylic materials have several distinct disadvantages, most notably their vulnerability to scratching, chemical sensitivity, and lower impact resistance compared to materials like polycarbonate or glass. Because acrylic surfaces scratch relatively easily, they require careful cleaning with non-abrasive cloths and specialized cleaners to maintain clarity. Additionally, acrylic can crack or craze when exposed to high mechanical stress or harsh organic solvents such as acetone and certain paint thinners. Over long periods of outdoor exposure, lower-grade acrylic can also yellow or degrade under intense ultraviolet solar radiation, limiting its long-term durability in bright environments.
