What are the red flags during an audit refers to both behaviors by the taxpayer that concern auditors and items in records that trigger deeper examination. From the auditor perspective, red flags include lack of documentation or receipts for deductions, inconsistent numbers between bank statements and reported income, large round numbers that look estimated rather than actual, altered or suspicious documents, reluctance to provide records, providing incomplete or disorganized records, claiming personal expenses as business expenses, and inability to explain business operations. Saying things like I guessed, I did not keep records, or everyone does it are behavioral red flags. From the taxpayer perspective, red flags in your return that trigger audit include large business losses for multiple years, claiming 100 percent business use of a car, disproportionately high charitable donations relative to income, high travel and meal expenses, large home office deductions, cash business with low reported profit, and mismatches between 1099 income and reported income. During an audit, auditors also flag lifestyles inconsistent with reported income, such as high spending with low income, and unreported foreign accounts. Being cooperative, organized, and providing only requested documentation helps avoid creating additional red flags.
