While felt materials—such as asphalt-saturated construction felt or wool craft felt—offer great versatility, they possess notable disadvantages depending on application. In construction, traditional organic felt paper used under roofing or flooring can tear easily when wet, wrinkle under humidity shifts, and degrade faster than modern synthetic alternatives. In textiles, wool felt absorbs water readily, dries very slowly, shrinks when exposed to hot water, and can pill or attract moths over time.
