Yes, the rectangular reset button on a standard Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) safety outlet should normally be pushed inward and held flat in a latched position during standard operation. When a GFCI trips to interrupt a ground fault or shock hazard, its internal mechanical latch releases, causing the reset button to pop outward and cut power to the receptacle slots and any downstream devices. If the button is popped out, power is disabled. You can troubleshoot GFCI status easily by observing button position. You can verify that your corrective action is successful when pressing the reset button firmly inward until it clicks and holds position restores stable 120-volt electrical output to the outlet and verifies normal circuit protection.
