Some granule loss from GAF shingles can be normal, but excessive or early granule loss is not normal and may indicate aging, damage, or defect. Like all asphalt shingles, GAF shingles have ceramic-coated mineral granules embedded in asphalt for UV protection. During the first year after installation, it is normal to see some loose granules in gutters due to initial shedding of extra granules not fully embedded during manufacturing. After that, gradual granule loss over 15 to 20 years is expected as part of normal weathering. However, if your GAF shingles are losing large amounts of granules within the first few years, showing bald, shiny black spots where asphalt is exposed, or filling gutters heavily after each rain, that is not normal and suggests a problem. Causes of abnormal loss include hail damage which knocks granules off with distinct bruising, foot traffic on the roof, poor attic ventilation causing excessive heat buildup that loosens granules, or manufacturing issues. GAF has had class action lawsuits related to premature granule loss on certain Timberline lines. If your roof is relatively new and losing granules excessively, document with photos, check your warranty, and have an independent roofing inspector assess whether it is defect, storm damage covered by insurance, or normal aging. Never pressure wash shingles, as it causes severe granule loss. If loss is widespread and roof is 20 plus years old, it indicates end of life.
