Fixing granule loss on shingles is limited because once granules are lost, they cannot be reattached with the same factory durability to restore full UV protection, but you can perform cosmetic and protective measures for small areas. For minor granule loss where a small bald spot of black asphalt is exposed and surrounding shingles are still flat and functional, you can apply a thin layer of asphalt roofing cement over the exposed area with a putty knife and then sprinkle matching loose granules, collected from gutters or by scraping a spare shingle, onto the wet cement, pressing gently. This provides temporary UV protection and improves appearance but is not as durable as original embedding. For widespread granule loss across large areas, there is no effective repair that restores the roof to new condition. The best approach without full replacement is to slow further loss and protect the roof. Ensure excellent attic ventilation to reduce heat that loosens granules, keep gutters clean, trim overhanging branches to reduce abrasion, avoid walking on the roof, and never pressure wash. Some companies market coatings that claim to bind granules, but most manufacturers warn these can void warranties and have limited proven benefit. If granule loss is extensive with many bald spots, the roof has lost its UV protection and will deteriorate rapidly, so planning for replacement within 1 to 3 years is more cost-effective than patching.
