Standard commercial rubbing alcohol is formulated using isopropyl alcohol (isopropanol) or sometimes ethanol, whereas methanol is methyl alcohol. While both are toxic if ingested, isopropyl alcohol primarily causes severe gastric distress and central nervous system depression, whereas methanol metabolizes into lethal formic acid, causing blindness and organ failure.
