Italy is not self-sufficient in petroleum production and relies heavily on international crude oil imports to satisfy its domestic industrial, commercial, and transportation fuel requirements. While domestic extraction fields in the southern regions and offshore areas yield minor quantities of oil and natural gas, the vast majority of petroleum feedstock is imported via maritime tankers and transnational pipelines from diversified global suppliers across the Middle East, North Africa, and Central Asia to fuel its extensive downstream refining sector.
