While some homeowners occasionally use bleach to kill mold and algae in their AC drain lines, it is generally discouraged by many HVAC manufacturers and technicians due to potential risks. Pouring undiluted or strong household bleach directly into the condensate drain line can release harsh chemical fumes that are sucked into your ductwork and circulated throughout your living spaces, causing respiratory irritation for occupants. Additionally, repeated use of harsh chlorine bleach can degrade, weaken, and corrode plastic PVC fittings, rubber seals, and metal components within condensate pumps over time. If you choose to use bleach, it must be heavily diluted with plenty of water, though safer alternatives like distilled white vinegar, three percent hydrogen peroxide, or specialized HVAC enzymatic pan tablets are much better choices for regularly controlling organic buildup without risking damage to your equipment.
