In almost all circumstances, purchasing mass-produced stock cabinets or ready-to-assemble flat-pack cabinets is significantly cheaper than building them from scratch. Mass production allows large manufacturers to leverage economies of scale, purchasing raw materials and hardware at wholesale rates. Conversely, building a custom cabinet yourself requires acquiring expensive individual lumber sheets, specialized woodworking tools, hinges, drawer slides, and finishing materials that quickly drive up expenses. Furthermore, building custom cabinets demands a tremendous investment of time and precise woodworking expertise. Building is only more cost-effective if you already own professional woodworking machinery and have access to cheap or free reclaimed lumber materials.
