Is it access or assess depends on what you mean, as they are different words that sound similar but have completely different meanings. Access as noun means entry, permission to enter or use, such as access to building or access to data, and as verb means to enter, retrieve, or open, such as access a file. Assess as verb means to evaluate, judge, estimate, or measure value, quality, or condition, such as assess damage, assess performance, assess risk. They are not interchangeable. Use access when talking about entry, permission, or retrieval. Use assess when talking about evaluation or judgment. For example, you access the system to assess student performance, you assess the situation before granting access. Spelling difference is access with double c and single s, assess with double s and single c. A memory trick is assess has double s like evaluation, both about judging, while access has double c like come in. If you are unsure, ask whether you mean enter or evaluate, if enter use access, if evaluate use assess. Both are correct words but in different contexts.
