Is hitting a tree collision or comprehensive depends on whether you are talking about US insurance terminology or Australian terminology, because the terms are used differently. In the US, collision and comprehensive are two separate cover types. Hitting a tree would be considered collision coverage in the US because it involves your car colliding with an object. Comprehensive in the US covers non-collision events like theft, fire, flood, hail, animal strikes and vandalism. In Australia, the terminology is different. Australia uses Compulsory Third Party for injury, Third Party Property Damage, Third Party Fire and Theft, and Comprehensive Car Insurance. Comprehensive in Australia is the highest level and includes both what Americans call collision and comprehensive. So in Australia, hitting a tree is covered under comprehensive car insurance if you have it, because comprehensive covers at-fault accidents including single vehicle accidents where you hit a tree, pole, wall or fence. It would be considered an at-fault collision claim, you would pay your excess of $600 to $1,200 and your insurer would cover repair costs to your car minus excess, up to market or agreed value, and also cover any property damage to the tree if it belongs to someone else under your third party property section. If you only have Third Party Property Damage insurance, hitting a tree is not covered for your own car damage, it only covers damage you cause to other people's property, so you would have to pay for your own car repairs yourself.
