Can you drive any car if you are fully comprehensive in Australia is a common misunderstanding from the UK where comprehensive policies often include Driving Other Cars extension. In Australia, comprehensive car insurance follows the car, not the driver, so your comprehensive policy covers your insured car regardless of who is driving it with your permission, but it does not automatically cover you to drive any other car comprehensively. If you drive your friend's car, you are covered by your friend's insurance on that car, not your own. If your friend only has Third Party Property or no optional insurance, and you have an at-fault accident while driving their car, your own comprehensive policy on your own car will not cover damage to their car or the other car. Some Australian comprehensive policies do include a limited extension for driving an uninsured third party vehicle, but it is very limited and only provides Third Party Property Damage cover, not comprehensive cover for the car you are driving. For example, Allianz, NRMA and QBE may include up to $5,000 to $10,000 cover for damage you cause to other people's cars while driving an uninsured car with permission, but they will not cover damage to the car you are driving. So you cannot assume you can drive any car fully comprehensively. Always check the other car's insurance before driving it. If you regularly drive multiple cars, you need personal cover or ensure each car has its own comprehensive policy.
