"Ghost flushing" (when a toilet randomly runs for a few seconds on its own) is not an immediate emergency, but it is a serious waste of water and money. It is caused by a slow internal leak through a warped or deteriorating rubber flapper valve, which allows water to seep from the tank into the bowl until the water level drops enough to trigger the fill valve. Over a month, this unattended leak can waste thousands of gallons of water and inflate your utility bill. Verification: Add food coloring to the tank; if colored water appears in the bowl within 15 minutes, the flapper must be replaced.
