Even without visible wastewater backup, a persistent sewer smell in your home can be caused by several common plumbing issues. The most frequent culprit is a dried-out P-trap in an infrequently used guest bathroom shower, sink, or floor drain that has lost its protective water barrier, allowing sewer gases to vent freely. Other causes include a cracked toilet wax ring seal, an obstructed or cracked roof vent stack, an accumulation of decomposing organic biofilm inside a sink overflow channel, or a hidden underground pipe crack. Verification: Pour a pitcher of water down every drain in the house to recharge dry P-traps and check toilet bases for leaks.
