To use a drop cloth for painting effectively, you need to choose right type and lay it properly to protect floors and furniture. First, choose canvas drop cloth for floors because it absorbs drips and stays in place, and plastic drop cloth for furniture because it is cheap and waterproof. Clear the area of small items. For floors, unfold canvas drop cloth and lay it flat covering entire floor area under painting zone, extending at least 2 to 3 feet beyond walls, ensuring it lies flat with no wrinkles or bunched areas that create trip hazard, and tuck edges against baseboards. Use painter's tape to secure edges to baseboard if needed to prevent shifting, but avoid taping to finished floors that may leave residue. For furniture, drape plastic drop cloth over sofas, tables, and cover completely and tape edges. When painting, avoid stepping on wet paint on drop cloth, and if large spill occurs, clean quickly before it soaks through thin canvas. After painting, let paint on drop cloth dry before folding to avoid transferring wet paint to clean surfaces. Shake out or vacuum dry paint chips after job, fold and store for reuse. For hardwood, consider rubber-backed canvas to prevent bleed-through.
