To seal a kitchen faucet base correctly, start by cleaning away old putty, debris, and scale from the countertop surface. If your countertop is laminate, stainless steel, or porcelain, apply a continuous rope of plumbers putty around the bottom rim of the faucet baseplate. If you have natural stone (granite or marble), apply a thin bead of 100-percent silicone sealant instead to prevent oil staining. Lower the faucet into position and tighten the mounting nut underneath. Verification: Wipe away excess squeeze-out and check that the base sits flush and watertight.
