Modern Apple MacBooks manufactured with Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3, and M4 chips) or recent Intel processors are designed by default to turn on automatically the instant you open the laptop lid or connect it to a power adapter. If you wish to disable this automated behavior, you must use the macOS Terminal utility. First, open the Terminal application from your Applications folder or via Spotlight search. Second, type the precise command sudo nvram AutoBoot=%00 and press Return. Third, enter your Mac administrator password when prompted (note that typed characters will remain hidden for security) and hit Return. This command modifies the NVRAM parameters to prevent auto-booting upon lid opening. You can verify success by shutting down your Mac completely, closing the lid, and opening it again without the machine powering on automatically.
