The total population of active satellites in Earth orbit has expanded dramatically, with current tracking data recording over 15,000 to 18,000 operational spacecraft circling the globe. The vast majority of these active systems function as communication or broadband internet satellites, driven predominantly by massive commercial low Earth orbit mega-constellations like SpaceX's Starlink, which alone accounts for a significant majority of working payloads. Other global telecommunication networks, such as Eutelsat OneWeb and regional geostationary communication fleets, add thousands more payloads dedicated to voice, data, and broadcasting.
