A clogged toilet will almost never unclog itself naturally unless the obstruction consists entirely of loose, soft toilet paper that dissolves over several hours when exposed to standing water. If the blockage is caused by dense paper clumps, sanitary products, or solid waste, leaving it sitting will not clear the trapway. In fact, prolonged standing wastewater can breed bacteria, create foul odors, and cause permanent porcelain staining. Verification: Check the bowl water level after 3 hours; if it remains high without receding, mechanical intervention using a flange plunger is required.
