When a small gas-powered generator engine becomes flooded with excess liquid gasoline inside the combustion chamber, simply waiting for the fuel to evaporate naturally can take anywhere from thirty minutes to several hours, depending on ambient air temperature and humidity. However, waiting passively is inefficient and unnecessary when you can clear the flood manually in minutes. To unflood the engine immediately, shut off the fuel valve, disconnect the spark plug wire, remove the spark plug with a socket wrench, and pull the recoil starter cord firmly three to four times to vent trapped fuel vapor. You can troubleshoot flooded engines safely by keeping ignition sources away. You can verify that your corrective action is successful when wiping the spark plug dry, reinstalling it securely, turning the fuel valve back on, and pulling the starter cord causes the engine to catch and start normally on the first pull.
