Stiebel Eltron water heaters are known for exceptional longevity compared to standard tank water heaters, largely due to their German engineering and lack of a large storage tank that can corrode. A Stiebel Eltron electric tankless water heater, such as the Tempra Plus series, typically lasts 15 to 20 years, and many units have been documented to last over 20 years with minimal maintenance. This is significantly longer than a conventional tank water heater, which usually lasts 8 to 12 years, and even longer than many competing tankless brands that average 10 to 15 years. The reason for this durability is that there is no anode rod to replace, no tank to rust, and the heating elements are designed for self-modulating operation that reduces thermal stress. The lifespan depends heavily on water quality, proper installation with correct wire gauge and breakers, and annual maintenance like cleaning the inlet filter screen and descaling in hard water areas. Their Accelera heat pump storage models also last 12 to 15 years. Stiebel Eltron backs this up with strong warranties, often 7 years for leaks and 3 years for parts, and lifetime support, making their long-term cost of ownership very attractive.
