No, GE breakers do not properly fit in a Square D panel and should not be used interchangeably, even if they appear to physically clip in, because doing so violates electrical code and creates a serious safety hazard. Square D panels are designed and UL listed to work only with Square D breakers that match that specific panel series. Square D Homeline panels are listed only for Homeline breakers, and Square D QO panels are listed only for QO breakers. GE breakers have different dimensions, bus bar contact designs, and trip characteristics that are not tested or approved for Square D bus bars. Using a GE breaker in a Square D panel can result in poor contact with the bus bar, leading to arcing, overheating, and potential fire. It also voids the UL listing of the panel and violates the National Electrical Code requirement that equipment be used according to its listing and labeling. If a home inspector or insurance company sees mismatched breakers, it will be flagged as a defect. The only exception is breakers that are specifically classified by UL as classified breakers for use in other panels, such as some Eaton CL breakers that are UL classified for Square D, but standard GE breakers are not classified for Square D. Always use the correct Square D breaker for your panel.
