Running a dishwasher without a spray arm is technically possible, but it is strongly discouraged because the appliance will fail to clean your dishes entirely. The rotating spray arms are solely responsible for pumping water under pressure across all racks to wash away food residues from plates, bowls, and silverware. Without the spray arms distributing water streams, the machine will simply fill the bottom basin with water without spraying it upward, leaving your load completely unwashed, dirty, and covered in dried detergent residue at the end of the wash cycle.

No, you should never run a dishwasher without a spray arm installed. While the appliance will technically execute its electrical cycle, the lack of spray arms means water cannot be directed onto your dishware. Water will flood or spurt uselessly out of the bare central hub, leaving your dishes completely dirty and covered in food and soap residue. Furthermore, running the machine without the hydraulic resistance provided by the spray arm nozzles can occasionally disrupt pump pressure regulation. Always snap or screw the spray arm back into place before washing.
