Running a dishwasher without a spray arm is technically possible, but it is strongly discouraged because the machine will fail to wash your dishes effectively. The rotating spray arms are solely responsible for propelling water under pressure across all racks to clean and rinse food residues from plates, bowls, and silverware. Without the spray arms distributing water streams, the dishwasher will simply fill with water at the bottom basin without spraying it upward, leaving your load completely unwashed, dirty, and covered in dried detergent residue at the end of the cycle.

Running your dishwasher without a spray arm is strongly discouraged, because the spray arms are fundamentally responsible for distributing water and detergent across your dishes. If you run a cycle without an upper or lower spray arm, water will simply pool or spray uncontrollably from the exposed water feed manifold without circulating over the racks, leaving your plates, bowls, and silverware completely unwashed, covered in leftover food particles, and caked in undissolved dishwasher detergent. Additionally, open water delivery ports can experience pressure imbalances. Always reattach or replace a missing spray arm before starting a wash load.
