Mixing distilled white vinegar and liquid laundry detergent together in the same wash load is generally ineffective and counterproductive. Laundry detergents are formulated to be alkaline to break down grease and body oils, whereas white vinegar is acidic; combining them directly causes the acid in the vinegar to neutralize the alkaline agents in the detergent, rendering both substances much less effective at cleaning clothes. Instead, use detergent during the main wash cycle and add vinegar to the fabric softener dispenser for the rinse cycle. You can troubleshoot wash performance easily. You can verify proper washing results when separating detergent use from vinegar rinsing leaves your garments clean and soft.
