You cannot and should not attempt to manually ignite a modern residential tankless water heater with a match or standard lighter, because contemporary units rely on fully automated electronic control modules, digital flame sensors, and internal electronic spark igniters for safety. Attempting manual ignition on a sealed combustion chamber or gas valve assembly creates an extreme risk of gas leaks, flash fires, and fatal explosions. If your electronic ignition fails, you must troubleshoot power supplies, gas valves, or error codes rather than bypassing safety mechanisms.
