Generally, adult US citizens cannot drive into Canada without a passport or an approved alternative WHTI-compliant document such as a US Passport Card, Trusted Traveler Program card (NEXUS, FAST, or SENTRI), or an Enhanced Driver's License issued by select states. A standard, non-enhanced state driver's license alone is insufficient for border re-entry or entry into Canada. For minor children under the age of 16 arriving by land, a certified birth certificate is typically accepted by Canadian and US border services officers.
